Phenol peel

Treatment of deep scars and skin folds

Strong peel with maximum effect

A peel using phenol is the strongest of all chemical peels and is mainly used to treat deep scars and skin folds, pronounced pigmentation disorders and extreme light damage. The phenol peel causes very deep skin peeling, down to the deeper connective tissue. Due to the depth of the peel, it is only carried out by our experienced dermatologists at the HAUT- UND LASERZENTRUM AN DER OPER.

Informations about the phenol peel

While fruit acids are used for a superficial peel, phenol produces a complete renewal of the facial skin. Significant rejuvenation can be achieved as a result. This effect cannot be achieved with any comparable treatment, but a very long healing phase must be planned for after a phenol peel.

Phenol peels are used exclusively on the face. It is indicated for severe scars and skin folds, pronounced pigmentation disorders and severely damaged skin from light as well as for certain preliminary stages of skin cancer. We advise patients with dark skin colour against a phenol peel, as it can lead to permanent skin lightening. A slightly lighter complexion may even develop with light skin types.

Since a phenol peel is very painful, we recommend sedation during the treatment. Before the peel, the skin is cleansed first, then the phenolic solution is applied and finally the treated area is completely covered with protective plasters. The plaster bandage is removed after 24 hours. An antiseptic powder is then applied, which forms a firm scab. This remains on the skin for about one week.

One treatment lasts about 45 minutes. This is usually sufficient to achieve a convincing result. Otherwise, the peel can be repeated a second time.

In the first few days after the treatment there may be severe swelling. After a phenol peel, the skin needs longer to recover than with other peels. You can go outside again after two to three weeks at the earliest.

After a phenol peel, direct sunlight should be avoided for four months.

As a rule, one session is all it takes to achieve an even, smooth skin that looks significantly rejuvenated.

Phenol has a lightening effect, which is why it should never be used on dark skin types. Otherwise, the peel contributes to a significant lightening of the entire facial skin. Since a phenol peel results in strong peeling, it is crucial that the doctor treating you is experienced. This is the only way to virtually rule out any possible complications.
Systemic side effects may occur during the peeling process. Therefore, we always carry out the treatment monitored by an anaesthetist.

FAQ

Peels have a different effect depending on their intensity. While a superficial peel (e. g. with fruit acid) specifically removes corneous cells from the epidermis, a phenol peel works deep into the lowest layers of the dermis. A phenol peel can therefore also be used to achieve far more intensive results, even if the recovery periods are considerably longer and serious restrictions must therefore be expected.

On average, the result achieved with just one treatment lasts for about ten to 15 years. Provided that the skin is consistently protected with a high sun protection factor, which is essential especially in the first three months.

Contraindications include acute herpes infections, very dark skin types, sun-damaged skin with burns and patients with heart, liver, or kidney disease. However, we also advise against treatment during pregnancy or if you have diabetes.

A deep peel is exclusively intended for application on facial skin. A superficial peel is better suited to the body. With low concentrations, it can be used to treat regions such as the neck, the cleavage and the hands.

Small scars may remain after the treatment in extremely rare cases. However, the risk can be considerably reduced if the patient receives the appropriate follow-up treatment and follows the advice given.
