ALLERGOLOGY

Allergic diseases are becoming more and more common. The term allergy refers to an erroneous immune reaction, in which an inflammation reaction occurs to otherwise harmless substances at points of contact on the skin and/or mucous membrane. These substances are called allergens. Symptoms can show themselves as, among other things, an allergic running nose, but also as allergic asthma or eczema.

As well as allergens that occur in the environment, such as pollen, animal hair, house dust mites and foodstuffs, there are also allergens that we come into contact with at work or during cosmetic care. These include chemicals, medicines, cosmetics and fragrances. Vegetable formulations applied to the skin, such as natural cosmetics, can also trigger allergies.

Allergic diseases can be diagnosed by means of various skin tests, but also by a blood test. Based on the test results, the complaints described and the clinical symptoms, our allergists will initiate a suitable treatment. These aim primarily and as far as possible at so-called abstention – the leaving out of the allergen. Allergic asthma and allergic running nose can be treated with medicines.

Over the long term these symptoms can be ameliorated with hyposensibilisation. This is a specific vaccination treatment in which minimal quantities of the allergen (e.g. pollen or house dust) are injected under the skin, causing a protective function of the immune system to be activated which renders the problematic allergens harmless upon natural exposure. Autohaemotherapy can also contribute to exerting a positive influence on the immune system.
